He graduated from Seoul Foreign School in June 1937. Graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York with a B.A. in 1941. He was ordained March 1, 1944, by the Presbytery of Brooklyn Nassau at the same service with his father Horace H. and his brother, James H. Underwood. The triple ordination was covered in TIME magazine. He graduated B.D. at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1945, and then spent a year studying the Korean language at Yale University.
He married Jean Welch in September 1954.
