U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Tusculum College, in 1876, he studied law, was assistant clerk of Cocke County, (1877-78), was admitted to the bar in 1878 and commenced to practice law in Newport, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1881-83) and chief examiner in the General Land Office at Washington, D.C., (1889-93). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving until 1897. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was founder-editor of Plain Talk newspaper and a member of the Newport City Council at the time of his death at age 49. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
