In 1869, Rufus Goodell was appointed agent for the St. Mary's Canal Mineral Land Co. in Houghton. It was estimated that at one time, he owned about 127,000 acres of agricultural and mineral land and did well with his investments. The Goodell family in later years invested in the oil distribution business which did very good through the growth of the American automobile industry locally. The couple moved to Pasadena and following the death of his wife in 1925, Rufus lived with his daughter Katherine Abbie.
Rufus Riley died at the age of 89 years.
