1st Earl of Worcester
Baron Herbert
Lord Chamberlain
of the Household of Henry VIII
Knight of the Garter

Charles was the illegitimate son of Henry Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset, and Joan Hill. He was later legitimized, and is believed to have married three times.

His first marriage to Lady Elizabeth Herbert, 3rd Baroness Herbert, occurred on 2 June 1472. She was the daughter and heiress of the 2nd Earl of Pembroke. Together they had two surviving children - the heir Henry and a daughter Elizabeth.

Somerset was created Baron Herbert in right of his wife, and when she died he became one of the greatest landowners in Wales, having inherited her vast holdings there.

Charles' second wife was the Honourable Elizabeth West, daughter of the 8th Baron de la Warr, with whom he had two sons - Charles and George - and a daughter Mary, later Baroness Grey de Wilton.

Eleanor Sutton was his last wife. She was the daughter of the 2nd Baron Dudley, and later married the 1st Viscount Grane. Their marriage was childless.
