Solomon Smith was born on Coshocton County, Ohio March 28, 1840 and died at his late home in Greenup, Illinois, January 4, 1929, aged 88 years, 9 months and 7 days. He came to Illinois with his parents when he was 12 years old and settled on a farm 6 miles south east of Greenup, where he spent the most of his life. Twenty five years ago he moved to Greenup.

On January 18, 1871 he was married to Eliza Carson. To this union were born two daughters: Ethel deceased and Mrs. Bertha Murk, Danville, Ill. Mrs. Smith died in August 1927. He leaves his daughter, 6 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Madlem of Greenup, and one sister Mrs. Street in Kansas, besides a host of friends. Forty four years ago he professed a faith in Christ and united with the New Light Christian church.

In 1862 he enlisted in the 123rd Illinois Mounted Infantry and was mustered out as a Corporal, serving 3 years in the Civil War.

The funeral services were held from his late home in Greenup Sunday, January 6th at 1:30 P.M. Rev. Harry M. Ingram pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Bros. Ozier and Wright assisting. Mr. Fancher of Casey made several remarks concerning Mr. Smith's bravery in the Civil War. Burial was made in Carson cemetery.
