John Wm. Jacobs died at his residence near Baker's Grove, on March 14th at 8:30 p.m. He has for many years’ past been very sorely afflicted. Strong and healthy in his early years, he overworked and unwisely exposed himself. As a consequence, rheumatism in a most aggravated form attacked him, and twisted his joints, limbs and whole body in a most pitiable manner and finally that disease, combined with consumption, brought him to an untimely grave.

He was born in Germany on January 3rd, 1840 and consequently was in his 45th year when he died. He leaves an aged mother, wife and eight children, besides other relatives to mourn his departure. On Monday preceding his death, at his earnest request, having given evidence of his changed views and feelings and professing his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the session of Tranquility church administered to him the Lord 's Supper. They also, at the united request of both parents, who had been in former years members of the German church, administered the sacrament of baptism to the five younger children, the three older sons having been baptized at Davenport, Iowa.

The funeral services took place last Sabbath at 1 p. m. at the Baker’s Grove school house, Rev. D. Hughes officiating. A large audience was present to sympathize with the afflicted family. May the Lord be the widow's God and the orphan’s stay.
