U.S. Congressman. U.S. Senator. He attended Mercer University, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1875 and commenced to practice law in Thomson, Georgia, in 1876. Entering politics, he was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives (1882-83). In 1891, he was elected as a Populist to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, served as editor of the People's Party Paper and was President of the People's Party in 1904. In 1921, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until his death from a cerebral hemorrhage.
