Western Figure. Born Frank Joshua North in Ludlowville, New York, at age 16 he moved to Nebraska and worked as a transporter, moving goods between Omaha and Fort Kearny. It was in this capacity that made contact with the Pawnee Indians, became friends, learned their language and was working at the reservation trading post in 1860. In 1864, he was working as an interpreter for a group Pawnee when US Army General Samuel R Curtis had him organize a company Pawnee scouts to help the Army during the Indian War. Appointed the rank of Lieutenant, for the next 13 years lead the scouts in a number of campaigns against the Plains Indians and was mustered out a Major of US Scouts 1877. After the war, he went into partnership with William F "Buffalo Bill" Cody in a cattle ranch at the head of Dismal River in Western Nebraska. He also served with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as Indian manager in the 1880s.
