William Bennett was born October 13,1845 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania.
Sept. 24, 1861, he enlisted in Company E, 54th Pennsylvania volunteers, serving three years. Re enlisted serving until the end of the CW.
He fought in the battles of New Market, on the Shenandoah,
Piedmont, Lexington, Lynchburg, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar
creek. Fort Gregg, in front of Petersburg, and at High Bridge,Virginia. William was taken prisoner at High Bridge April 9, 1865. He was released after Robert E. Lee's Surrender.
July 3, 1865, Married Sarah Ann Critchlow. They were the parents of 13 known children. Their 18 month old son EARL drowned and a daughter, Sadie died of Scarlett Fever when she was abt. 2 years of age. 2 of their sons, Daniel and Stephen were both killed at the blast furnace.
1876 moved to Braddock accepting employment with the EDGAR THOMPSON STEEL WORKS.
March 1, 1890 became a Patrolman with the Braddock Police Force. Became Chief of the Police Force on April 15, 1894
