Usually styled 'Mr John Stretton', denoting the respect he was shown by his fellow townsmen, his name appears frequently in the extant records of East Hampton, including his appointment in 1694 as town collector. By the terms of his father's will, he received half of the dwelling house and home lot during the lifetime of his mother Sarah, and after her death, the entirety of it. He also received seven other lots of land along with commonage rights in the town and at Montauk. He and his wife Mary were members of the church at East Hampton when Nathaniel Huntting became its pastor, and who baptized their son John on Dec. 10, 1699.

John Stretton, yeoman, of East Hampton died testate with a will dated Oct. 2, 1721, which was proved Dec. 5, 1735. He made his brother-in-law John Conkling his executor, and the witnesses to the will were Robert Hudson, Matthew Mulford, and Samuel Gardiner. The church records state that he died on Feb. 19, 1734/35 at about 7 P.M., aged about 90 years.
