Samuel Azra Davenport
Birth: Jan. 15, 1834
Death: Aug. 1, 1911

U.S. Congressman. Born in Watkins, New York, he moved to Pennsylvania with his parents to Pennsylvania, in 1839. He attended the Erie Academy, studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1854, graduated from the Harvard Law School, in 1855 and commenced the practice of law in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was elected district attorney for Erie County in 1860, was owner-publisher of the Erie Gazette, (1865-90) and a delegate to the Republican National Conventions, (1888, 1892). In 1897, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fifth and Fifty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1901. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and engaged in the manufacture of various products. He died at age 77 in Erie, Pennsylvania. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
