Son of Jennie and John Childs. According to the 1870 census, he married Minerva Whittington in August 1869. They had a daughter Minerva E, born in Louisiana, and son James Franklin Childs, born January 28, 1872, in Texas.

He was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors included a daughter, Mrs. Tom Mahan of Arcadia, and 6 sons: Fred, Louis, John, and Jim of Center, W. F. of Chillicothe, and Bryan Childs of Post, Texas.
