Mrs. Yancey was born in 1918, in Frederick County, VA, the daughter of the late Jasper Melvin "MK" Karicofe Sandy and Cora Lillie Mason Sandy. She had been a teacher at John S. Mosby Academy in Front Royal, Virginia, Winchester City and Frederick County, VA Public Schools.
She was the oldest surviving member of Stephens City United Methodist Church where she had been a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She was the owner of Yancey Rentals and White Oak Trading Post and Campground in Stephens City.
Mrs. Yancey was a graduate of Stephens City High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and worked toward her Masters Degree at Madison College (JMU).
Her husband, Berlyn S. "Boot" Yancey, whom she married on August 25, 1938, in Frederick, MD, preceded her in death on July 21, 1979.
Surviving are a son, Thomas S. Yancey and his wife, Judy of Stephens City; a daughter, Joyce Y. Largent and her husband, N. Bradley of Stephens City; four grandchildren, Julie Y. Brennan, Jason T. Yancey, Shelley L. Drago and Bradley J. Largent; eight great grandchildren, Jessica Y. Brill, Justin A. Yancey, Chalyn E. Drago, Devyn D. Drago, Kylee G. Drago, Camdyn A. Drago, Brittany M. Puffinberger and Jordan M. Largent; great great grandchildren, Taylar S. Brill and Makayla R. Brill; a sister, Mary S. Ritter of Winchester; and a brother, William E. Sandy, of Winchester.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances S. Shiley and Louise S. Buckley and by seven brothers, Raymond Taft Sandy, Robert L. Sandy, James H. Sandy, John M. Sandy, Melvin K. Sandy, Julian D. Sandy and Charles R. Sandy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday at Stephens City United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. Jeffery Butcher, the Rev. Waverly Reames and the Rev. Jackie Battles officiating. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Stephens City, VA.
Pallbearers will be Charles R. Sandy, Jr., Timothy A. Sandy, David N. Sandy, M. Richard Sandy, Raymond C. Sandy and Samuel R. Buckley. Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph S. Shiley, Kenneth T. Sandy, G. Stephen Ritter and Philip H. Ritter.
The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel on Wednesday from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
