James Alexander was born circa 1807 in Falmouth, Stafford County, Virginia. His father was Lewis Alexander (1776 - 1827). His mother was either Lucy (surname unknown) who died in Jan. 1808, or Elizabeth E. (Patterson) Alexander, who Lewis married in Aug. 1808.
Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Fredericksburg, VA. James married Ann "Nancy" Waller circa 1826. After his father's death in 1827, James went to Stafford in Stafford County where his uncle, Thornton Alexander, ran a store and tavern. Circa 1832 they both moved to Washington, DC, where they owned a tavern and eating establishment. Around 1839 they both left Washington, DC, Thornton for Natchez, MS and James for Portsmouth, VA. In Portsmouth James conducted a hotel on High Street where he entertained some of the most prominent men of the time, to include Henry Clay. James Alexander died in Portsmouth, VA circa 1847.
