TOPEKA - Chester, Carolyn, 66, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003 at her home in Topeka. Visitation 2 to 7:30 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, service 9 a.m. Wednesday, both at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel; committal service 2 p.m. Wednesday, Maize Park Cemetery, Maize, KS. Ms. Chester was born May 25, 1937 in Wichita, KS to the late Cecil Edward and Carolyn Marie Rhodes Chester. She lived in Topeka for 39 years. She graduated from Wichita North High School and attended Wichita State University. She was employed by the City of Topeka, Parks and Recreation Dept. for 39 years. She was a director at Crestview Community Center, Garfield Community Center, Rice Community Center, Oakland Community Center, Municipal Auditorium, Topeka Zoo, Gage Park Mini Train, Carousel and Concert Director. She was a volunteer at Helen Hocker Theater and was a previous Helen Hocker Theater board member. She was preceded in death by sister, Geneva Rhodes. Survivors: brother, Jack E. Chester of Wichita; sister, Frances Rivers of Bullard, TX; many nieces and nephews.
What her obituary doesn't tell you is that she was pure fun! She would serve you a fabulous meal, wait until you were stuffed then asked "Who wants a banana split? I'm buying!" Her house was a treasure trove of fun things to do and see.
