Old Wives Village Pioneer,
Mrs. A. Sheldon, Dies at 95

Mrs. Adeline Sheldon, a pioneer of the Old Wives district died in the hospital, November 28. She was 95.

Born in Bear Valley, Minn., on May 1, 1865 (sic?), Mrs. Sheldon came to Saskatchewan settling in the Old Wives district in 1912. Her family all settled close around her.

Her husband William predeceased her in 1935 and a son Lincoln in 1956. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mary Fries and Mrs. Carrie Hetherington, one son and daughter-in-law, Claire and Florence Sheldon, all of Old Wives; 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Sheldon's parents Theodore and Adeline Maire came to the United States from France when still children. Mrs. Sheldon was the last of a family of thirteen children and lived to a greater age than any of them.

Although she had no training as a nurse she did a lot of nursing in the early days on the prairie assisting at the birth of over 40 babies. She told many stories of her early life, such as candle making in the home and of her father reading the paper by the light of a candle. She also remembered the first coal oil lamps in her home.

The first store in the Old Wives district was in a corner of her kitchen. Even in her last years Mrs. Sheldon still sewed and did much of her reading without glasses, but the garden and flowers were her chief enjoyment and she worked there whenever the weather permitted.

Funeral services were held in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic church in Moose Jaw on November 30 and burial was in Rosedale cemetery. Pallbearers were five grandsons and a grandson-in-law representing each of her children's families. Friends and relatives attended from Regina, Mossbank, Boharm, Old Wives, Belbeck and Mortlach.
