Bitten By a Dog.

On last Friday morning a medium sized shepherd dog, very near the color of a red fox, came to the Coggin homestead, four miles northwest of LaFayette, and at once made friends with the children and others on the place. A little boy had occasion to go to the horse lot and the dog followed him. One of the mules took after the dog and succeeded in overtaking it and struck it several times with his fore feet. The dog bit the mule during the attack. Messrs. Jeff and Lee Coggin were told that the dog had bitten the mule, whereupon they secured a shot gun and a pistol and proceeded to call the dog, which promptly came toward them. As the dog approached near Mr. Lee Coggin, he fired one barrel of his shot gun at the dog, wounding it slightly. The dog then ran by Lee Coggins and approached near Mr. Jeff Coggin when he fired at the dog with a pistol, hitting the dog once and knocking it down. As quick as thought almost the dog sprang at Mr. Jeff Coggin and planted its teeth into his leg close to the knee. Mr. Coggin pulled the dog loose and it ran off, followed by several shots from Mr. Coggin's pistol. Mr. Lee Coggin and several of his neighbors followed after the dog but failed to kill it. In less than an hour after he was bitten Mr. Jeff Coggin was in town looking for a doctor.
Dr. Hudson dressed the wound and the patient is doing as well as could be expected. From what we can gather, Mr. Coggin need have no fears of the dog being affected with the rabies as it certainly showed no signs of a rabid dog. It played with Mr. Coggin's children that morning and never attempted to bite either Mr. Coggin or the mule until attacked in close quarters.
Mr. Jeff Coggin says he will pay five dollars for the dog, that he may satisfy himself as to whether it was affected with rabies or not. The question is, whose dog is it?

In Memory of L. J. Coggin.

We so often wonder why God takes the most needed member of a family from a home. But we are human and so weak that we can't understand our Heavenly Father's divine ways.
On the afternoon of July 13, 1908, L. J. Coggin was called from this world of care and suffering to an eternal happy home in Heaven. He was the father of a large family and truly he was a devoted father and a loving, loyal companion. He never tired of his efforts for his dear wife and children. His many kind deeds were not confined to his family alone. Friends, neighbors and anyone in trouble held a large place in his generous heart. His was one of the most unselfish dispositions, we ever knew. In his home he was most hospitable. 'Twas one of his best pleasure to have others share God's blessings with him. All that met him were impressed with his bright smile and cheerful ways.
How sadly he is missed from his home. No more can his cheerful voice be heard. He has gone never to return. But in trouble like this all is not dark to the child of God. So little of the great and good can really die, their influence ever lives. While our dear loved one will be with us no more on earth, we believe we shall meet him again, and then there will be no more goodbyes. What a happy meeting that will be. We believe our loved one has gone to be with Jesus. We have another tie to bind us nearer our Lord.
Dear bereaved wife and children, look to Jesus for help and guidance. He is ever ready to help his children.
Let us not bow down in our grief, but let us look up higher to our never failing friend, Jesus.
