Samuel Alexander Hawkins was born in rural Marion, Smyth Co. Virginia. He was the fifth child of Solomon James Hawkins 1822 – 1892 and Mary James 1822 – 1870. His siblings were: Elizabeth Jane Hawkins 1846 – 1926, She married William Allen Buchanan on Oct 30, 1873; William Franklin Hawkins 1848 – 1945. He married first Louisa J. Walker "Eliza" on Jan. 20, 1870 and second Winnie Eliza Gulley on Oct. 161885; Ruffus J. Hawkins 1850 – 1884, he married Hannah Elkins on Sept. 28 1884; Lizzie Hawkins 1851 – 1910, she married John Mason on Sept. 15 1887; Noah W. Hawkins 1859 – 1921, he married Sarah Elizabeth Cobble Jan. 13, 1887; and Minerva "Nerve" Hawkins 1862 – 1938, she married Jacob "Jake" L. Wolfe on April 2. 1891. Alex had two half-brothers, Isham "Mack" Hawkins 1871 and Charles Hawkins 1873 – 1953 and 1 half-sister, Lue Verna "Verne" Hawkins 1880.

When little Alex was about a year old when his Grandma, Betsey Petree Hawkins, died and when he was about nine years old his grandpa, Lazarus Hawkins, and papa and mama and all of his brothers and sisters moved to
Hawkins Co, Tennessee.

Before moving to Tennessee, Alex and his two older brothers, Bill and Rufus, like to swim in the middle fork of the Holston river near their home in Marion, Smyth Co., Virginia.

After moving to Tennessee they lived on a farm near White Horn. Early in 1870 his mother died and his father married the second time to Nancy Cantrell on April 10, 1870.

Alex claimed Malaha Ann Cline as his bride on Feb. 5, 1880. Ann presented him with five children. They were: William N. Hawkins 1881; James Venoy Hawkins 1883 – 1949; Henry H. Hawkins 1889 – 1969; Lizzie Lee Hawkins 1894 – 1908; and Dewey Patrick Hawkins 1898 – 1960.

Alex and Ann raised their family on a farm that he owned near White Horn. Alex loving wife passed away Jan.11, 1926. Alex lived until June 29, 1939. He was buried next to his beloved wife, in the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. (bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
