American Folk Figure. Sullivan was a fisherman on the ship, the 'Andrea Gail.' On September 20, 1991, the ship left Gloucester, Massachusetts, with a six-man crew to go on a trip swordfishing to the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, Canada. Around October 28-30, they were expected back to Gloucester after fishing with their sister ship, the 'Hannah Borden' but ran into unexpected trouble with a storm. They were officially believed lost on October 31, and an all out search by the Canadian Coast Guard took place on November 1st, searching from Woods Hole, Massachusetts, to Cape Breton Island, but no trace was found of the ship or its crew. On November 2, the United States Coast Guard was called in and did an air search for 21,000 square miles but again nothing was found. After 11 days of searching, the search was called off, and the ship and its crew were presumed lost at sea. The story of the ship and its crew inspired the book, "The Perfect Storm" by Sebastian Junger, and the film by the same name in 2000.
