Denise McCune; City Hall Receptionist

Denise McCune, a longtime Ventura County resident who worked until she was 75 as a receptionist at Oxnard City Hall, has died of emphysema. She was 80.

When McCune retired from the insurance business at age 66, she wasn't quite ready to quit working, said her daughter, Maureen Sage. So she got a job at City Hall working Monday through Friday afternoons as a receptionist, directing people to the right office. "She said it was her ideal job because she always wanted to tell people where to go," Sage said.

Born Feb. 16, 1916, in Salt Lake City, McCune was raised in Billings, Mont., where her family owned three movie theaters. After graduating from Billings High School in 1935, she attended the University of Montana for one year.
In 1939, she married her high school sweetheart, Tony McCune, and moved to Los Angeles, where he was pursuing a master's degree at USC. During World War II, McCune went to work at a McDonnell Douglas factory while her husband was stationed in the Army in Colorado and Nevada. When he returned, the couple settled in Long Beach and began raising their family.

McCune did not work again until moving to Camarillo in 1958, where she took a job as a claims processor at an insurance company. In the early 1960s, she became the assistant manager at Beck-Brown & Dwire insurance company in Oxnard, where she worked for 20 years before retiring. In 1971, McCune and her husband moved to Port Hueneme.

McCune was active in the Omichron Chapter of the Phi Alpha Kappa Multiple Sclerosis sorority, a philanthropic organization. She was the group's local historian and held the presidency seven times. She was also a member of the Oxnard Women's Club and the Ventura County Women's Council of the Navy League of the United States. In her spare time, McCune handmade cards out of magazine clippings and construction paper. She sent them to friends whose birthdays and wedding anniversaries she kept in a special diary. "She never missed a one," said Sage.

McCune's husband died in 1974. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a brother, John Duncan of Great Falls, Mont., and two grandsons.

A rosary will be recited at the James A. Reardon Mortuary in Oxnard at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Church in Oxnard. Interment will follow at the Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo. Donations may be given to the the Omichron Chapter of the Phi Alpha Kappa Multiple Sclerosis Memorial Fund.
