Granz has been a resident of this stte since 1869, a period of 51 years. He was born near Cheriritz, Germany in 1841 and came to america in 1868. Before coming here, he learned the trade of cabinet-maker. He also learned the agricultural business throught working on his father's farm.

Granz worked in New York for a year at his trade and then came to California. He established a small furniture factory in the Hayes Valley district of San Francisco, which started on a small scale and gradually increased to enormous proportions. He shipped his finished produects to all parts of the state, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada and the Hawaiian Islands. He later built a steam plant on Brannan Street where his business grew. This he built up planting it to vines. It was one of the pioneer wineries and had a small capacity at first but was increased to 250,000 gallons ultimately.

He later acquired an 80 acre vineyard and winery near Dinuba. This winery had a capacity of 300,000 gallons. He then invested his money in city property, buying four city blocks. These holdings he incorporated into the Granz estate in 1913.

He married Miss Adelaide Bauhofer in New York in 1868. She died a year and a half ago. Granz leaves eight children, Carl T, Edward H, O J, Mrs Hermina Sair, Mrs Sophia Gilbert, Mrs Adelaide Burks and Clara Granz.
