Medical Figure. She was the craniopagus twin (joined at the head) of Laleh Bijani. The twins were 29 years of age and died in surgey 90 minutes apart from one another. Although they were successfully separated, they died while under anesthesia after separation due to blood loss. The twins underwent the surgery saying they knew the risks, but wanted to achieve their dream of living independent lives. Laden wanted to continue as a lawyer, Laleh wanted to become a journalist. They also wanted to look at each other face-to-face for the first time. "If God wants us to live the rest of our lives as two separate, independent individuals, we will", Ladan said before the final tests Saturday ahead of the surgery. The risky procedure began about 10 p.m. Saturday and lasted roughly 50 hours. Although doctors warned that the surgery could kill one or both of the twins, or leave them brain-dead, Ladan and Laleh's wishes were to be separated under all circumstances. The twins were born into a poor family of 11 children in Firouzabad, Southern Iran, but grew up in Tehran under doctors' care. (bio by: Grace, Peace and Love, Karen)
