JACOB MANUEL PETERMAN
The obituary of Jacob Manuel Peterman was not received for publication in the Journal until this week.
Jacob Manuel Peterman was born in Crawford county, Ohio on March 16, 1851. and departed this life on Jan. 15, 1926. Had he lived until March 16, he would have reached the age of 75 years. He was the twelfth of thirteen children, parents and children having all passed on with the exception of the younger brother John.
He came with his parents to Page county, Iowa in 1854, when he was but three years of age, and settled on a farm near Hawleyville, later moving south of New Market. Here he grew to manhood, his parents having passed away when he was but a boy. He spent several years of his early manhood in Colorado on a ranch. He married to Alice R. Hakes on Dec. 9, 1886. They lived on a farm near Clarinda for several years, later purchasing a farm one mile from New Market, where he spent the remaining years of his life. He was a great lover of home, taking great pride and comfort in his home and could not easily be persuaded to leave it even for a day.
Two years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and gradually became quite feeble and helpless and was tenderly nursed by his loving wife, who scarcely left his side. All that loving hands could do was done, but our Lord said "come." No children came to bless this home, but there was a stepson, Ora Van Sandt, who was loved and cherished as a son of his own. This son came from Oakland, Calif., and spent many weeks last summer helping to care for his father, and is present today.
"Uncle Jake," as his friends loved to call him, was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and friend. He was ever ready to lend a hand in time of need. A good man is gone, and he will be greatly missed. He leaves to mourn, his wife and son, one brother, john, and a number of nephews and nieces, besides a host of friends. Six of the nephews were pall bearers.
Services were held at his home near New Market, conducted by Rev. James Wilkins of the M.E. Church of New Market, at 2:30 PM Tuesday Jan. 19, 1926. Interment was made in Clarinda cemetery.
