Daniel was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and the son of Daniel and Mary Gowell Merritt.
He married Hannah Cates (1782), daughter of Samuel Cates and Ruth Thorndike. She was from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, but made him a widower ten years into their marriage.

Hannah Allen (married 1795), daughter of Obediah Allen and Mary Rideout Ingersoll became his second wife. She, too, had been widowed and likely they found comfort in understanding each others grief. Daniel and Hannah had three children, Isabel (1796), Anna (1798), and Rebecca Drisko (1806).

After being widowed a second time by Daniel's death, Hannah married his brother, William (before Apr 1808) and they had a daughter.
