Father of Lewis DeWitt.
From the book written by Mabel Ord, "100 Years Ago" for the centennial of DuBois, NE 1954.
Henry DeWitt seems never to have taken a claim. He came in 1858 with his family to Richardson county and then lived in various places. The DeWitts, wife Elizabeth Willman, originated in Ohio, and lived in Indiana and Iowa before coming to Kansas and Nebraska. 1871 old Prairie Star school census records say they lived in Section 33, and the oldest daughter Christina, 18, Elizabeth, 15, Mary, 13, Samuel, 11, Emma, 6. Theirs is an interesting family genealogy touching many DuBois families. Emma is our Jennie Westerman's mother, Mary the mother of Lew Britt, and Christina of Ben Britt. Elizabeth married Pete Shellhorn and they lived and farmed and raised fruit on their 80 aacres on the state line. Lewis DeWitt, an older son, was many years a DuBois resident, and Nellie Smith's father.
