Albert Austin Bennett

Architect, contractor, and builder, born in Schoharie County, New York, on July 26, 1825 of Quakers, Dr. Joseph and Mary Bennett. At the age of 18 he began to study architecture and carpentry, three years later moved to Montgomery, Alabama where he worked on the State Capitol. Arriving in California with many others in 1849 to try his hand in the gold fields, he returned to his chosen profession of architecture, contracting and building when his big strike never happened. Staying in California, he worked on the State Capitol, designed the Governor's Mansion and the San Quentin Prison and workshops. He designed eight county courthouses, including those for Yolo, Stanislaus, Merced, Fresno, Tulare, Kern, Sonoma and Humbolt...only this one is still standing. He also did numerous public buildings in San Francisco. He died in 1890 and is buried near the State Capitol in the City Cemetery of Sacramento.

This photograph of him has been generously provided by his grandchildren, one of whom is also an architect.
