US Congressman. He was born one of three children (he also had two brothers, Oliver S. Vreeland born in 1842, and Addison Gardiner Vreeland born in 1844) in Cuba, New York, to Simon Vreeland and Jerusha Butterfield Vreeland. He was educated in local public common schools and then attended Friendship Academy where he graduated from in 1877. Following his education, he moved to Salamanca, New York, where he became the Superintendent of the local public schools there from 1877 to 1882. On February 27, 1881, he married Myra Scott Almira Price and the couple had three children (Laura Elizabeth Vreeland was born in 1882, Anna F. Vreeland was born in 1885, and Edward Price Vreeland was born in 1889). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar, but he did not engage in active law practice, instead, he became engaged in banking and the oil and insurance business. He then served as President of the Salamanca Trust Company in Salamanca, New York, in 1891, and as the Postmaster of Salamanca, New York, from 1889 to 1893. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to the Fifty-Sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative Warren Brewster Hooker. A Republican, he then served New York's 34th and 37th Districts (Fifth-Seventh and to the five succeeding Congresses) in the United States House of Representatives from 1899 to 1913. While serving in the United States Congress he served as Chairman on the Committee on Banking and Currency representing the Sixty-Sixth Congress and was a co-author of the Aldrich-Freeland Bill or the Aldrich-Freeland emergency currency act which focused on the Federal Reserve System. He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1912. After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1913, he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Edwin Stewart Underhill. He also served as Vice Chairman of the National Monetary Commission from 1909 to 1912, and was a Delegate to the Republican National Convention in New York in 1916. After his time in public service had ended he continued with his former business engagements in Salamanca, New York, until his retirement on January 1, 1936, due to ill health. He passed away in Salamanca, New York, on May 9, 1936, at the age of 79, and was buried in the Wildwood Cemetery in that city. He was a longtime member of the Freemasons.
