U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Union College in 1824, he studied law at Litchfield Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1828 and commenced to practice law in Johnstown, New York. He was the Columbia County District Attorney, (1832-43) and elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress, serving 1851-53. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he moved to New York City, was an associate justice of the New York Supreme Court (1857-71) and presiding judge of the court of general sessions (1872-78). Retiring from public service, he practiced law until his death.
