US Congressman. He immigrated to the United States and went to California during the gold rush. There he was employed on the street railway system of San Francisco, became manager and later relocated to Albany, New York. He engaged in business as a brewer, was director of the National Savings Bank of Albany, fire commissioner of Albany (1869-78) and was Mayor of Albany, (1878-81). In 1881, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh Congress, serving until 1883. Not seeking a re-nomination, he was again reelected Mayor of Albany and continued his business interests until his death at age 72.
