U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to New York, in 1815, he graduated from Hamilton College, in 1822, studied law, graduated from the Litchfield Law School in 1824, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Utica, New York. He was Utica City Attorney in 1837, a member of the New York State Assembly in 1850, a trustee of Hamilton College in 1851 and judge of the New York State Supreme Court of the fifth district, (1854-70). 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1879. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 86. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
