Sherman was the son of Johnny Askew and Susie Mae Brown Askew. He was educated in the Houston County School System. He was a member of Green Grove Baptist Church in Elko, Georgia.

He was married to Robin Lester Askew on April 4, 1954, they had 7 children.

5 Daughters: Jeanette Askew, Sheena Askew, Amanda Askew, Shirlene Beasley and Myrtice A. Tripp.
3 Sons: Lucious Askew, Sherman Askew Jr and Benjamin Robinson.
Mother: Susie Mae Askew.
2 Sisters: Edom Mae Rumph and Essie Mae McWilliam.
7 Brothers: James Askew, Henry Askew, Herman Askew, Richard Askew, Glein Askew, Charlie "C.B." Askew and Johnny Askew.
2 Sons-In-Law: Benny L. Beasley and Albert Tripp.
7 Sisters-In-Law, 8 Brothers-In-Law.
9 Grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, June 27,1987 at 1pm in the Sanctuary of Green Grove Baptist Church in Elko, Georgia with Rev Harold Ross officiating.
