Came to America on June 4,1926 at the age of 18. He traveled here with his Father Walter, Mother Karoline, and sisters Elfrieda, Edith, and Ella. Having left the Port of Hamburg Germany on May 22,1926 aboard the Arabic, he arrived in this country with 50.00 Dollars in his pocket and a dream of becoming an American Citizen and having a better life. His two older sisters Lina and Paula came before him in November 7, 1921 from the Port of Antwerp Belgium aboard the Findland and February 23,1923 from the port of Bremen aboard the Seydlitz, respectively.
Walter obtained his Citizenship in 1928.
He spent his entire life working in the service of others. After obtaining hi citizenship he joined the United States Army and served at Fort Belvoir Va,for his entire enlistment, as a cook. After that he began a career that spanned 56 years first as a busboy, then Waiter at the Deshler-Hilton Hotell in Columbus and later as the Room Service Manager at the Columbus Sheraton Hotel, where he retired from in 1983.
He was first Married to Elizabeth Marshall and the Step father of Norma Marshall (Hugh)Leggett, and Bettijo Marshall(Frank Frederick II)Distelzweig. Married to Mary Amelia Brown and Father to Jaye Leslie (Michael)Sarbry.
In June of 1983 he made the trip back to Germany, accompanied by his wife Mary, and eldest daughter, Bettijo
He was predeceased by his Father, Mother, Brother Kurt,Son In Laws Frank Frederick Distelzweig II and Hugh Leggett, Mother In law Clarissa Blance Crossman, Great Grandson Robert Bruce Distelzweig.
