Artist. A prolific modern art painter, his work was highly respected even though he was not well known to the public. After moving to Hartford, Connecticut in 1898, he attended the Connecticut League of Art Students. The son of a tanner, he worked night jobs in order to paint during the day. In the 1920s he moved to New York City, New York where he met financier and art patron Roy Neuberger who was impressed by his talent and purchased over 100 of his paintings and loaned or donated them to museums throughout the world. In 1944, The Phillips Collection art museum in Washington DC gave him his first solo exhibition. Among his notable works include "Bucolic Landscape" (1930), "Bridge to the Sea" (1937), "Gaspe Pink Sky' (1940), "Three Figures and a Dog" (1943), "Autumn' (1944), "Oregon Coast" (1947), "Nude Combing Hair" (1954), "White Moon' (1957), "Green Sea" (1958), "Sea Grasses and the Blue Sea" (1958), and "Blue Bay and Dunes" (1961).
