George E. Waight was born in Melksham, Wiltshire, England, May 24, 1835, and departed this life July 27, 1926, at the ripe old age of ninety one years, two months, and three days.
He leaves to mourn his passing one brother Dr. W.F. Waight of Leon, IA, a sister and three brothers having preceded him in death. He also leaves a number of nieces and nephews with a number of great and great-great-nieces and nephews. He grew to young manhood in the neighborhood of his birthplace, the immigrating to this country settled in Montreal, Canada for a time, then moved to Quebec where he remained for a number of years. After making several trips back to his old home, on returning to the States for the last time, he came to the vicinity of Shanghai, IL, where he made his home for the last forty-five years, taking an active interest in the events of the community, and as far as is known was the oldest man in Warren County.
His last illness was of short duration early in the morning he was up and dressed, remarking that he felt good; but about 10 o'clock a sudden change was noticed, and he failed rapidly, sinking into his last sleep at 11:15 of Tuesday morning.
Funeral services were held from the United Brethren Church of Alexis Thursday afternoon July 29, 1926, at 2 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Sarah D. Bowman officiating, taking her text from Ecclesiastes 12:13. Burial was made in the Fuller cemetery about ten miles east of Alexis.

Pallbearers were friends and neighbors of the deceased: Allen Moore, Charles Glass, Aaron Yarde, Bert Yarde, Fred Bellinger, and Mort Stone.
