Following an illness, Gordon Wayne Harrison passed away at 12:50 PM on Saturday, December 25, 2010, at age 94.

Mr Harrison was born August 3, 1916 in Memphis, Michigan, to Elias and Ada (Lown) Harrison. He was raised on a nearby farm, owned by his Grandparents, Jacob and Delilah (Farmer) Lown, graduating from Memphis High School in 1933. Grandmother Delilah lived to see her 100th birthday, passing in 1944 and no doubt attended her grandson's graduation.

Gordon moved to Sharon County, Pennsylvania in 1938 and lived in the valley every since. He most recently resided at The Colony at St Paul's, West Salem Township; previously residing in Charleston, Jefferson Township.

He served in the U S Army during World War II, in Field Artillery and was an instructor at the Officer Candidate Field Artillery School, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He then served in the 450th Field Artillery Battalion as a technician 4th grade sergeant receiving an honorable discharge in 1945 at fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.

November 30, 1946, Gordon married his wife of 64 years, Helen Trapasso Harrison, who survives at home. The couple were married in Trinity Presbyterian Church of Mercer, with the Rev J Davis Illingworth and the Rev Charles Evan LaMale officiating.

Mr Harrison was an auto mechanic at the former Brainard Chrysler-Plymouth Motors in Sharon, from 1946 to 1962. Then, until his retirement in 1981, he was an insurance agent, employed by the Ohio State Life Insurance Corporation.

Gordon was a member of the Mercer County Historical Society, the Jefferson Township Civic League and was a volunteer for the Cancer drive in the Charleston area for a number of years. In 2001, he was inducted into the Mercer county and Pennsylvania Voter Halls of Fame for having voted in the general election for more than 50 consecutive years.

Our subject served as an elder in the Community Church of Christ, Sharon Branch, and also served as branch pastor for several years.

Besides his wife, Mr Harrison is survived by a nephew Keith DeForest and his wife Mary Ann of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee; a niece, Janet Monsour and husband Shaw of St Clair County, Michigan; and a niece-in-law, Betty DeForest of Muskegon, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Linford E DeForest and Russell E Harrison; and by two sisters, Annabel DeForest and Beatrice McNorton.

Gordon will be remembered by all who knew him, for his quick wit and keen sense of humor.

At Mr Harrison's request, all services will be held privately and officated by the Rev Dr William Crooks, pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Mercer.

Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermiage.
