Annabelle was the daughter of John Adelbert & Arabella Allison Gray. "Dolly" was born in the living apartment of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway Station where her father was station agent and telegraph operator at the time.

On account of the novelty of her birthplace, she was for some time called "Dolly Depot". She went with her parents from place to place, as her father's occupation required him to go, until they finally settled at Canon City, Colorado. Here she graduated in 1908 from high school. Annabelle devoted much time to the study and practice of music both vocal and instrumental, where she acquired great proficiency. At an early age she united with the Methodist Church. While in Denver, Colorado Annabelle was employed as a clerk in the Knight-Campbell music store.
