Olaf was born in Norway and came to Wisconsin with his mother, brother and sister in 1887. Olaf worked in Ketchikan, Alaska on the building of a canning factory for a few years. When Olaf and Selma came to Jessie Lake in 1917 from Washington, they had been married for 8 years and had 5 children, ranging in age from one to six. He and Selma married in the Amery, Wisconsin area in 1909. Olaf and Selma were very active in the Lutheran Church, Olaf was the Sunday School Superintendent. Olaf changed the family name from Hanson to Bendix (Bendickson shortened) after Hazel was born in 1913 when he became a naturalized citizen. The last name of Bendick, Lawrence and Hazel was changed automatically at that time.

Another son John Loyd Bendix b 3 Aug 1918 d 10 March 1983 is buried Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Kalamazoo County Michigan
