Ruth Marie Smith Borkes, 55 years of age, wife of Steve Borkes, and a resident of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at the University of Louisville Hospitals in Louisville, Kentucky.

Ruth began her life on December 26th, 1955 in Wilmington, Ohio as a curly red hair bundle of joy to Janice Smith and Lenville Smith. She grew up in Ohio, Michigan, Alabama, Kentucky, and Florida. She was united in marriage to Steve Borkes on March 20th, 1993 at the Hyde Park Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Most recently she worked as a hospice nurse for Tri County Health Services out of London, Kentucky. She started her nursing career by graduating from Miami University in Middletown, Ohio, and became the youngest registered Ohio nurse at 18 years old. Ruth then spent 22 years at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio working in cardiac care, floor nursing, and kidney dialysis. After taking time off to raise two daughters, she worked as a floor nurse in a cardiac step-down unit with Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan. She was in the process of furthering her nursing education at DeVry University at the time of her passing.

Ruth lived a active life. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on several Church committees including the Growth and Membership Committee in Farmington, Michigan. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Somerset, Kentucky when she departed this life. Another large part of Ruth's spiritual life was Healing Touch. She was introduced to this healing modality during her time at Good Samaritan Hospital, then proceeded over the next decade to reach all four levels of certification. Ruth practiced from her home and a community Healing Touch clinic, as well as having a business for a short time. She also attained a certification in Reiki energy medicine. She integrated these aspects of her spiritual life with various projects including designing and building a Labyrinth at Farmington First United Methodist Church. Ruth also integrated Healing Touch into floor nursing under a grant in a small Oakwood facility in Wayne, Michigan.

Ruth's hobbies included reading, watching movies, cooking, gardening, world travel, and spending time with family and friends.

Ruth was survived by her loving husband, Steve Borkes of Somerset, Kentucky; two daughters, Eleanor Elizabeth "Ellie" Harding (and her fiance, Edvin) of Leipzig, Germany and Lucinda Marie "Luci" Borkes of Somerset, Kentucky; her mother and step-father, Jan and Frank Schantz of Somerset, Kentucky; one sister, Linda Chadwell (and Darrell) of Hustonville, Kentucky; and a host of other family and friends who mourn her passing.

Ruth was preceded in death by her father, Lenville Smith; and one son, Charles Benjamin Borkes.

THIS IS A TRIBUTE IN MEMORY OF RUTH,

I'd like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I'd like to leave an after glow
of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve,
to dry before the sun
of happy memories
that I leave when my life is done.
