John Showalter

John Arthur Showalter died Jan. 22, 2011, at Huntington Beach, Calif., after an extended illness, surrounded by his loved ones.

John was born on Feb. 18, 1944 in Baltimore, Md., the son of James Arthur Showalter and Naomi Lowe Showalter. Yet, he was raised in Parkersburg by his maternal aunt Jenny Loritsch and her husband Joseph. Following graduation from Parkersburg High School in 1962, where he was a member of the A Cappella Choir, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corps and served as a combat engineer from 1962-1968. He was stationed in Hawaii and El Toro Marine Base in California.

After his discharge, he attended Santa Ana College in California. He was a devout Roman Catholic who attended daily Mass. John was a member of the St. Timothy Contemplative Prayer group, the Knights of Columbus, Kairos Prison Ministry, and an Oblate of the Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, Calif. John's love of music continued as he sang for the Irvine Master Chorale, and he was an avid reader of spiritual books and a prolific writer of letters. He had an enormous heart for charitable service and brotherly love.

John is survived by his wife, Julie Showalter of Laguna Hills, Calif.; his first wife, Lois Vogel Showalter; and sons, Jason and Stephen Showalter of Parkersburg; five grandchildren, Samantha, Laikin, Gage, Zoe and Jeston of Parkersburg; one brother, Joseph Showalter and two sisters, Christine Miller and Rose Angel of Akron, Ohio. Also a special aunt Jackie Luther of Dayton, Ohio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Father Joseph Peterson will be celebrant; Deacon Jerry Showalter homilist.
