"Pearl Romaine Hacker Fasnacht, longtime Ephrata resident and currently of Brethren Village, passed away early Wednesday morning at the age of 90.
Born to Charles and Anna Hacker on February 5, 1917, Romaine was the wife of the late Robert E. Fasnacht who died on August 5, 1982.
She was a 1932 graduate of Ephrata High School, and Salutatorian at age 15, and a 1936 graduate of Millersville State Teacher's College with a degree in education. At the age of 19, she was the first woman to be elected President of Normal Literary Group at Millersville State Teacher's College. She was a Latin teacher and later a kindergarten and nursery school teacher. She taught school on Franklin Street and in Newmanstown before later becoming the Ephrata Borough tax collector for many years. Upon retiring, she assisted her husband Bob with the family insurance and real estate business, PA game commission, Lancaster County GOP and his successful bid for County Treasurer.
She also served many years on the Ephrata Community Hospital Women's Auxiliary, helping with the snack bar and serving as treasurer for the June Fete. In later years, she also volunteered for Trinity Lutheran Church's Meals on Wheels program and later for Brethren Village.
She and her husband sold the land to the Ephrata Recreation Center for its current facility on S. Academy Drive, which was adjacent to their property on Lincoln Heights Avenue. Over the years the Fasnachts were great supporters of the Rec, ECH, Brethren Village, Lancaster County Conservancy, Penn State University, and the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley.
Romaine was a great lover of the outdoors, Liberace and playing cards. She grew up in the Trinity Lutheran Church and later joined the Ephrata Church of the Brethren.
She was preceded in death by her only child, Michael C. Fasnacht, who died in 1993.
She is survived by three grandchildren, Angie H., Andrew H., husband of Misty (Akers) Fasnacht, and Amy H., wife of Brian Devlin, all of Ephrata, her daughter-in-law Jessie Fasnacht of Akron and five great-grandchildren.
