The Onaga Herald
February 20, 1908
Mrs. Julia Sherman died at her home in this city, last Friday morning, February 14, after an illness of ten days duration. On the Sunday prior to her death she sat up in bed and seemed so well that the children were led to believe her entirely out of danger, but on Monday evening the pain in the back of her head returned and she shortly became unconscious, remaining in that state until Friday morning, when her spirit left this bodily temple, which it had inhabited for over seventy-four years, and went to be with the loved ones who had preceded her to the Eternal home.

The deceased was born in Albany county, New York, on the 17th day of September, 1833, and died on Friday, February 14th, 1908, aged 74 years, 7 months and 28 days. When quite young she moved with her parents to the state of Michigan, and later moved to Indiana, where she was married to her late husband, Hiram Sherman, on April 11th, 1856, in LaPorte county. Five daughters were the result of this union. They are Mrs. Chas. D. Powell, of Westmoreland, Mrs. Jacob Allsopp, of Arispie, Mrs. A. E. Brown, of Sherman township, Mrs. C. W. Myers of this city and Maud Sherman deceased.

Mr. and Mrs. Sherman lived in Iowa a number of years, coming to Kansas in 1871 and settling in Pottawatomie county on a farm in Sherman township.

The decease was a sister of the late Mrs. O. J. Grover, and leaves a brother, Wm. Boothe, who resides in Arkansas, also a sister, Mrs. Cordelia Riser, of North Judson, Indiana. She was a member of the Christian church and was a good woman, a devoted mother, and possessed many estimable qualities and is mourned by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. She was a mother indeed to her four daughters, always being sollicitious of their welfare, and they can truly "call her blessed."

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Sunday morning, Rev. Ayers, the pastor, presiding, assisted by Rev. J. W. Bayles of the Baptist church. The church was filled with sorrowing friends who had gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to one whom they held in high esteem. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. The remains were laid to rest in the Onaga cemetery beside those of her husband who departed this life about five years ago. The Herald extends its sympathy to the bereaved ones.
