BIOGRAPHY UPDATED on 28 Sep 23

Rella Black was born on 25 Feb 1889 in Toledo, Cumberland County, Illinois. Her parents were David Ira Black and Louisa (Reed). She had at least 12 siblings and half-siblings from her father's two marriages. She had 8 full siblings Ora Jiles (m. Van Horn/Nowlin), Alfred Oren, Emma Ellen (m. Connors), Serepta (Died in infancy), John Andrew, William, Eletha Muriel (m. Rowland), and Mary Mabel (m. Hire/Hart). She also had 3 half-brothers from her father's first marriage to Sarah; James Marion, Thomas McClellan and Charles W and a half-sister Mollie Reed (m. Hill) from her mother's previous relationship with an unknown man. According to census records, the highest grade she completed in school was the 8th grade. All records indicate she was educated and could read and write.

In her early years, she lived with her parents in Union Township in Cumberland County, Illinois. Since their servicing post office was Diona (located in the upper portion of Union Township near Coles County), I assume they lived close to that location, but exact location is unknown. According to the 1900 United States Federal Census taken on 11 Jun 1900, they were living in Union Township in Cumberland County Illinois. At the time, Ruella was 11 years old and lived with her parents David Black (58) and Louisa M (44) and her 5 siblings; Ora J (19), Alfred O (15), Emma E (13), John A (9), and Aleatha M (3). According to the 1910 United States Federal Census taken on 22 Apr 1910, she was 21 years old and living in Mahomet Township, Champaign County, Illinois as a live in servant to the John P. Perkins Family. According to the 1914 city directory, she and her parents were listed as living at 204 Avondale Ave, the residence of her stepsister Mollie Hill. She probably lived with her stepsister until her marriage to Fred in 1917.

Rella was 27 years old when she and 44 year old Fred Henry Rubow, son of August Rubow and Fredericka Wilhemina Esch, applied for a marriage license on 16 Jan 1971 in Fountain City, Fountain County, Indiana. They were married the same day by Asa Osborn, Justice of the Peace. Rella and Fred had five children; Lloyd Henry, Pauline Jeanette Juanita, Frieda Irene, and Margaret Deetta. An unnamed daughter passed away as an infant in 1922.

After her marriage, it appears they stayed in the Champaign area. According to the 1918 city directory, they were listed as renting a house at 905 North Poplar St, Champaign, Illinois next to Fred's Parents house. According to the 1920 United States Federal Census taken on 16 Jan 1920, they rented a home at 905 North Poplar Street in Champaign Ward 1, Champaign County, Illinois. At the time, Rella Rubow was 30 years old and lived with her spouse Fred Rubow (45) and their two children, Lloyd (2) and Pauline (1). It appears they lived at this address until around 1925. According to city directories, they apparently moved four times over a 4-year period. It is unknown why this is the case, but may have had something to do with Fred's job as a carpenter. In those four years, they lived at 771, 719, 811 and finally 807 South Wabash Ave in Champaign, Illinois. According to the 1930 United States Federal Census taken on 21 Apr 1930, they owned a home at 807 S. Wabash in Urbana, Cunningham Township, Champaign County, Illinois. At the time, Rella Rubow was 41 years old and lived with her spouse Fred H Rubow (52) and their four children, Lloyd H (12), Pauline (11), Frieda (10) and Margaret (6). According to the 1940 United States Federal Census taken on 3 May 1940, they were still living at 807 S. Wabash in Urbana, Cunningham Township, Champaign County, Illinois. At the time, Rella Rubow was 52 years old and lived with her spouse Fred Rubow (67) and three children, Lloyd H (22), Pauline (21) and Margaret (16). According to city directories from 1928-1941, they lived at the 807 Wabash address until around 1941. After the death of her husband in 1945, it appears she stayed in the area. According to the 1950 United States Federal Census taken on 4 May 1950, she lived with her daughter in Urbana, Champaign, Illinois. At the time, Rella Rubow, now widowed, was 61 years old and lived with her daughter Frieda I Wascher (30) and her husband Ralph E Wascher (55) and their daughter Patarica A (10). She lived at this address until her death in 1954.

Rella passed away at the age of 65 on Saturday night, 12 Jun 1954 at Burnham City Hospital in Champaign, Champaign County, Illinois after suffering from a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, 15 Jun 1954 at Renner Funeral Home in Urbana. She was laid to rest next to her husband Fred and son Lloyd in Section 15, Lot 8, Space 9 of Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois.
