A memorial service for Leon Brown, former editor and publisher of The
Baytown Sun, is at 10 a.m. Friday at Memorial Baptist Church, 600 W. Sterling Ave., Baytown, TX 77520.

Brown, 71, died of complications Sunday during surgery to repair a broken hip suffered in a fall Saturday in his hotel room in Santa Fe, N.M., where he and his wife, Mary, were vacationing.

Brown lived in Baytown 46 years and published The Sun from 1974 until 1992 when he became vice president of Southern Newspapers, Inc, the parent company of The Sun.

He was born in Pleasant Hill, La., and grew up in Coushatta. He was a graduate of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La.

Prior to moving to Baytown, he was a school teacher and speech therapist in Dallas.

Brown was a longtime member of Memorial Baptist Church in Baytown, and was a member of the Board of Deacons and a Sunday school teacher.

In addition to other civic activities, Brown was a past president of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce and the Baytown Rotary Club.

He was also a past director of The United Fund and the board of directors at Goose Creek Country Club.

In addition to his wife, Mary, Brown is survived by a daughter and
son-in-law, Laura Kathryn and Joey Gauss of Houston; two grandchildren,
Sydney and Sam Gauss of Houston; a brother and sister-in-law, Nettles and Glenelle Brown of Natchitoches, La.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Laura Hartman of Richmond; three nephews, Lesh Brown of Lake Oswega, Ore., Fred B. Hartman of Austin and Lee Hartman of Sugar Land; two nieces, Breanna Shumpert of Baltimore, Md., and Elizabeth Sansone of Sugar Land.

In lieu of flowers the family requests a contribution to a charity of the donor's choice.
