Emil J. Unger, 91, of Whiting, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at Aristacare at Whiting. Mr. Unger was born in Piermont, N.Y. and lived in Keypont for many years before moving to Whiting. Emil was a musician in the 1950's and 1960's as the leader of Ace Unger's Nite Owls, and owned Ace Unger's Music Spot in Keyport. His music combo performed in various clubs in north and central New Jersey and at the Jersey Shore. Later, he had a career in real estate, earnings awards for sales and listing in Monmouth County. He eventually opened Unger Realty, with offices in Keyport and Marlboro. Emil retired to Whiting in 1999, but continued to pursue his lifelong love of performing, singing and playing sax and banjo with his combo, The Variatones. He served in the Army from 1940 to 1945 and was stationed in Alaska and later in the European theater, where he participated in the Normandy Invasion. He is a member of the American Legion Post #23 in Keyport, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9503 in Bayville. He is a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Whiting, where he participates in the Choir.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Claire (Mahler) Unger, in 1970. He is survived by his wife, Pamela (Schmidt) Unger; his beloved daughter, Ruth Imbro and her husband Lawrence; two granddaughters, Jaime Hamilton and Heather Keane; and a grandson, Anthony Ferrano.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25 at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 115 Lacey Road, Whiting, with funeral services Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Whiting Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Keyport. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Whiting, or the Whiting Food Pantry, Whiting.
