After completing preparatory studies in financial business, he served as Selectman (1801 to 1803), Town moderator (1802 to 1823) and Town treasurer (1806 to 1816), for Sutton, Massachusetts. He also was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1806 to 1822). In 1823, he was elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, serving until 1825. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1826 and served in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1827 to 1829). Retiring from politics, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
