South African Politician,human rights campaigner,journalist,linguist,translator,literary figure. One of the founders of the South African Native National Congress,later the ANC.He first worked as a Post Office messenger in Kimberley and in 1898 took up a position in Mafikeng as a magistrates court interpreter.He kept a vivid diary of events throughout the siege of Kimberley during the Boer War.He was the first black South African to write a novel,Mhudi,in English.Fluent in at least seven languages he translated the works of Shakespeare into his native language Tswana.
