U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Brown University Rhode Island, in 1774, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1778 and commenced to practice law in Providence, Rhode Island. Returning to Massachusetts, he was justice of the peace for Worcester County, (1781-1823), special justice of the court of common pleas, in 1792, sheriff of Worcester County, in 1792 and a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1791-92). In 1793, he was elected as a Federalist to the Third Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1800. After his term, he was elected as a Federalist to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Samuel Dexter, serving (1800-03), when he resigned. He then was justice of the court of common pleas, (1803-11), a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1808-09) and held other state offices until his death at age 65.
