Gertie's parents were both born in Alabama. She moved to the south side of Daingerfield, Texas at a young age. Her parents divorced when she was about 3 years old. On the 1910 Census, she was listed in Morris County, Texas living with her mother Belven, lodging with the Ed Slayton family. On the 1920 Census, she was listed as a farm laborer in Justice Precinct 2, Morris County, Texas living with her father and stepmother. She taught school in Daingerfield prior to her marriage to Henry. She was living in a nursing home in Hughes Springs, Texas at the time of her death.
