Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was the son of Samuel Shepherd Curtis (1806-1874( and Mary Russell Everett (1814-1853). He served during the Civil War first as a Private in the 4th Battalion of the Massachusetts Militia, then as an officer on the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, eventually rising to Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the unit. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865, for "gallant and meritorious services during the war."
