Noele Gordon
Birth: Dec. 25, 1919
Death: Apr. 14, 1985

"In loving memory of dear Nolly, who devoted her life to her career. Her personality and ability established her as a national figure in British entertainment, and she is deeply missed by us all." Noele Gordon was born in East Ham in London, and trained as an actress at RADA. She has the distinction of being the first woman ever to be seen on colour television, during the experimental transmissions which were made in 1938 from the Crystal Palace in South London. After the War, she appeared in a couple of films, but concentrated on her stage work until, in 1959, she became the hostess of "Lunch Box", a chat show which was broadcast only in the Midlands. She is, however, best-remembered as Meg Richardson (later Meg Mortimer), the central figure of the soap opera "Crossroads". She appeared in 3,521 episodes of this from 1964 until 1981 when, to her disgust, her character was written out. The viewers were led to believe that she was asleep inside the eponymous motel, of which she was the manageress, when it burned down on November 5th. However, it was later revealed that her character had left without telling anyone and had sailed from Southampton on the QE2. Neither the programme, which was cancelled a few years later, nor Noele Gordon, recovered from this. She made a guest appearance in two episodes a year or so later, but was visibly ill. Although she spent most of her last years in Birmingham, where "Crossroads" was filmed and where she died, she is buried in Ross-on-Wye, where she had lived some years previously. Noele Gordon never married, and is said never to have recovered from a broken engagement in 1940. She is buried next to her mother. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
